Drainage intelligence

How it started
In 2023, Nottinghamshire County Council, in partnership with their drainage contractor Flowline, took the decision to modernise the way they deliver and manage drainage maintenance across the network.
Driven by the need to improve oversight, streamline operations, and enhance the responsiveness of both planned and reactive works, they implemented Drainage Intelligence, powered by map16 Asset Intelligence.
The goal was to gain real-time insight into field operations and create a more efficient, accountable system for drainage asset management.
The Solution
Drainage Intelligence has become a key tool in Nottinghamshire’s approach to drainage maintenance. Drainage Intelligence supports both planned and reactive works, enabling Flowline to schedule jobs efficiently, assign crews to specific routes, and track progress in real time.
Crews use the system to report silt levels, record inspections, and log defects, ensuring that all data is captured at the point of work. The software also helps tackle operational challenges such as blocked access due to parked vehicles by allowing crews to log and escalate issues quickly.
By digitising and centralising drainage operations, the Council and Flowline now have full visibility of all activity across the network, with robust reporting tools to support both day-to-day management and long-term service improvement.
The Benefits

The introduction of Drainage Intelligence has delivered significant benefits for Nottinghamshire County Council and Flowline.
They now have full transparency over crew performance, with daily tracking that enables managers to understand what work is being completed, where, and how efficiently. This visibility supports better decision-making, improved resource allocation, and more effective communication between office and field teams.
The ability to schedule and monitor works in real time, and to log and categorise defects, has improved response times and allowed the Council to proactively manage service delivery. Issues such as blocked access are now quickly recorded and acted upon, reducing delays and improving public satisfaction.
While not currently using the risk-based cleansing module, Nottinghamshire is still achieving strong results through efficient scheduling, clear performance tracking, and a more connected operational approach.
Summary
Through their partnership with Flowline and the implementation of Drainage Intelligence, Nottinghamshire County Council has taken a major step forward in modernising their drainage asset management.
The software has enabled smarter scheduling, real-time tracking, and improved crew performance monitoring - creating a more transparent and efficient approach to both planned and reactive drainage works.
The success of the system highlights how digital tools can transform traditional operations and deliver tangible improvements across local authority services.
